Natural stone façade cladding

Adopting natural stone cladding as a façade option provides a durable, aesthetically pleasing, low maintenance design solution which adds value to any project through use of high quality, low embodied carbon, environmentally friendly materials.

The predominant stones adopted for cladding in the UK are either indigenous or European sandstones or limestones, normally tonally complementary to the fabric of the local historic building stock. Typically, UK sandstones are used at 75mm or 100mm thick with harder European limestones viable at 40 or 50mm thick, all proven by test data and calculation. Granite, basalt, travertine, and slate while less frequently used can be designed for use at 40mm thick. Marble tends not to be used in the UK as a large-scale cladding material due to the UK climate and consequential weathering performance.

Guidance as to the selection and use of a cladding material should be considered at an early stage on a project, as the earlier the principles are agreed the greater the potential benefits to the overall project.
