In 2020, Leeds Beckett University required a new home for their academic creative and cultural activities. PMJ Masonry were involved in a design-led challenge to maximise on natural light while delivering a breathtaking showpiece.
PMJ installed stunning ashlar stone on the external façade of the building in precision-cut Portuguese Mocca Crème. The design-led masterpiece immediately captures the eye, enhancing the surroundings in which it sits.
Scope specifics:
Key challenges:
A design-led challenge from the off, PMJ were tasked with developing a cost-efficient solution which would be in keeping with the local environment, while also delivering an eye-catching finish. The team worked closely with main contractor Downing Construction, architect Hawkins Brown, and the local Leeds city planning department to develop a suitable design and propose the best option for stone.
Greatest achievement from the project:
The architect tasked us with maximising the natural light within the building. To achieve this, two feature elevation details of stone were incorporated with a precision finish nicknamed “TV punch screen”, and “shark gills”. These intricate designs were made possible and resulted in a flawless execution thanks to our cutting-edge software, in-house design detail using (REVIT-SOLIDWORKS), AEC Suite and strong partnership with our Portuguese stone manufacturers.
The result:
The project resulted in a finish which is both eye-catching and fitting for the local environment. All parties were pleased with the final result, and the building continues to draw admiration from its central Leeds location.
