South Bank Place London

  • Main Contractor:McAleer & Rushe
  • Architect:Axis / White Ink
  • Stone Type:Moleanos Limestone
  • Project Value:5 million

Building 5 is an integral part of the South Bank Place masterplan and Shell Centre redevelopment, which is transforming a 5.25-acre site within the South Bank Conservation area into a vibrant new quarter overlooking Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament.

The South Bank Place development will provide 92 apartments and 18,600 sq ft of retail space. The 15-storey building will house retail space on the ground floor, 88 apartments ranging from one to four bedrooms on Levels 1 to 11, and four superior double-height penthouse suites on Levels 12 and 13.

Scope specifics:

  • Hybrid handset / rainscreen natural stone façade
  • Balcony fascias, soffits, walls, and pedestal system paving
  • Extensive visual mock-up at ground level to review interfaces and final co-ordination and detailing

Key challenges:

Several challenges were overcome during the project, including differential movement between the primary frame and floors interfacing with the balcony structure. Being centrally located at a postage stamp site also meant that it was imperative that deliveries were scheduled on time. There was limited access to construct corner facades, but we developed mast climber soffit anchor points to allow fascia construction.

Greatest achievement from this project:

The standout features of the project were the steps in soffits with connected walls and the use of trapezoidal stone detailing. These added depth and texture to the façade, setting it apart from conventional stone cladding.

The result:

The development has become a highly sought-after residential location in the heart of London, attracting numerous residents and garnering widespread acclaim.
